Notes[]

  • Originally known as WNBK and co-owned with WTAM-AM-FM radio in Cleveland, on January 22, 1956, NBC traded the trio of stations to Westinghouse (which renamed them to KYW) in exchange for WPTZ and KYW radio in Philadelphia, both of which it renamed to WRCV. The FCC and Department of Justice investigated the matter for eight years, ultimately finding that NBC coerced and extorted Westinghouse into agreeing to the trade by threatening to pull its affiliation from Westinghouse-owned outlets WBZ-TV in Boston and WPTZ if the company did not give in to the network's demands. A swap was ordered in 1965, with WRCV-AM-TV returning to Westinghouse (and thus re-assuming the KYW call sign) and KYW-AM-FM-TV returning to NBC. As a nod to Westinghouse's ownership of the Cleveland outlets, NBC renamed them to WKYC after the reversal.
  • In 1990, NBC, after 25 additional years of ownership of channel 3, sold it to Multimedia Entertainment (which merged with Gannett in 1996).
