NotesEdit

  • The national anthem clip used in WMAQ-TV's signoffs from the 1960s until approximately 1985 was rumored to include subliminal messages in the lyrics to the United States anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner (first stanza) if played slowly. The version seen on signoffs recorded in 1981 and 1984 do not have this effect. More information here: http://www.infowars.com/real-or-hoax-1960s-subliminal-national-anthem-video-says-obey-government/
  • The call sign for WMAQ-TV stands for "We Must Ask Questions", which was a motto used on WMAQ radio since the 1920s.
  • On April 3, 1956, the station became the first in the world to broadcast all of its programs in color. The magazine Broadcasting-Telecasting described the $1.25 million investment in upgrades as "a daring breakthrough the black-and-white curtain".
